Associate Professor and Director of the MA in Special Education: Learning Disabilities Program, American University School of Education

Dr. Sarah Irvine Belson serves as the Director of the Master of Arts in Special Education: Learning Disabilities program and as the Executive Director of the Institute for Innovation in Education (IIE) in the School of Education (SOE) at American University. Dr. Belson earned her BA, MAE, and PhD from Arizona State University (ASU) and has worked in schools, school systems, industry, and higher education for over 30 years. Her current research explores educational opportunity for children with disabilities and teacher education policy in special education. She also serves PI for a number of sponsored research projects that study interventions and translational research in STEM, health and special education. Dr. Belson’s experience as a K12 special educator and her focus on interventions to educational outcomes for children with disabilities and reduce cognitive load in children with specific learning disabilities is a cornerstone of her research and teaching.
