An effective structured literacy program in spelling must be taught with explicit, systematic, and rule-based methodologies that start from a sound understanding of the orthographic system and teach its regularities. Because English is a morphophonemic language in which regularity is based on more than phonology, basing spelling instruction in phonological and phonemic principles as a starting point cannot do this effectively. This session will present four basic principles of the English orthographic system that lead to four simple, but effective, practices for classroom and tutoring spelling instruction.
