F16 - From the Printing Press to Twitter: The Role of Knowledge Transfer in Text Comprehension for Students With Learning Differences

Oct 28, 2016 11:45am ‐ Oct 28, 2016 12:45pm

Description

Readers who possess high levels of prior knowledge consistently exhibit better comprehension than readers with low levels of prior knowledge. In this study, we examined the extent to which well-developed background knowledge in a topic facilitates comprehension in a related topic. Participants included fifth-grade students with learning differences attending AIM Academy. Preliminary findings suggest that well-connected background knowledge facilitates transfer of knowledge to related topics.
