Readers who possess high levels of prior knowledge consistently exhibit better comprehension than readers with low levels of prior knowledge. In this study, we examined the extent to which well-developed background knowledge in a topic facilitates comprehension in a related topic. Participants included fifth-grade students with learning differences attending AIM Academy. Preliminary findings suggest that well-connected background knowledge facilitates transfer of knowledge to related topics.
