This presentation will share findings from two examinations into how choice and optimal challenge can foster engagement, persistence, self-efficacy, and improved reading outcomes among struggling readers. Spanning home and school contexts, online and offline environments, and elementary school to middle school, results suggest that optimal learning contexts offer students autonomy and provide appropriate challenges. Discussion will highlight the means for leveraging findings from home practices and online literacy environments to enhance motivation across instructional contexts.
