S3 - Transitioning to Higher Education: Challenges for Students With Disabilities

Oct 27, 2018 10:45am ‐ Oct 27, 2018 11:45am

Standard: $20.00

Description

Change is difficult for many people, but for students with disabilities, the transition from high school to higher education can be overwhelming. Students with disabilities may face challenges in seeking accommodations in college and on high-stakes tests. Laws governing K–12 and higher education differ; students should understand the impact that these differences have on their rights/responsibilities. During this presentation, ETS representatives provide insight into the differences in the laws, strategies for successful transition, and documentation requirements.

Learning Objectives:

  • ACCOMMODATIONS: Identify the critical elements in a disability document that will support the accommodation requests for students with learning disabilities.
  • ADVOCACY AND LEGISLATION: Understand the laws and interpretations under various legislative motions and learn ways to implement advocacy efforts locally or at the state level.

Disclosure: Morgan Blisard and Loring Brinckerhoff have no relevant financial or nonfinancial relationships to disclose.
